Has social media made us less social? people used to go out to socialize with their friends or family but now you can just search up their name (eg facebook)  and know what they are up to without any talking or conversation,People no longer need to be able to communicate properly with others because to the fact that the internet is doing it for them.

according to this graph Facebook remains by far the most popular social media site but its membership saw little change from 2013. , Other platforms like Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and LinkedIn saw significant increases over the past year.

Early cell phones were just for talking. Gradually, features like voicemail were added, but the main purpose was talking. Eventually, cell phone manufacturers started to to have a new idea that they could integrate other technologies into their phone and expand its features. The earliest smartphones let users access email, and use the phone as a fax machine, pager, and address book.

Social media apps like Facebook became very popular because of the development of  phones. The first touchscreen phone was a chunky, black box and it was called IBM Simon, it went on sale to the public on 16 August 1994. Its not just receiving and making phone calls, it was also able to send e-mails, messages and faxes. It also has very useful apps like appointment scheduler, calendar, calculator, world clock, address book, electronic notepad, etc. In 2004 Sony Ericsson P910 was released, it is an attractive flip smartphone with full internet connectivity. In 2007 the first iPhone was released with an auto-rotate sensor, a multi-touch sensor that allowed multiple inputs while ignoring minor touches, a touch interface that replaced the traditional QWERTY keyboards, and many more other features. In 2008 the iPhone 3G was made even more desirable by all the apps that could be purchased for it in the AppStore and social media became an apps and it was easier to use and therefore there was an increased of social media users like facebook, twitter, and instagram.

In recent years, the purpose of the cell phone has shifted from a verbal communication tool to a multimedia tool, often adopting the name “mobile device” rather than being called a phone at all. We now use our cell phones a lot for surfing the web, checking email, taking photos/selfies, and updating our social media status than actually making calls.

How did social media develop? eg. Facebook

Facebook started out as a Harvard-only social network back in 2004, it quickly expanded to other schools, then to high schools, businesses and eventually everyone (by 2006). Mark Zuckerberg a student from Harvard launched the site on February 4, 2004. Then called “,” the site became popular.  after six years, the site became the most popular social networking site and one of the biggest website in the world, visited by 400 million people a month. One of the reason why Facebook became really popular is because of the help of technology like phones, you can easily download the app “Facebook” on your phone and post photos, status and videos also phone is very handy compared to computers most people have more phones than computers. In 2011, manufacturers shipped 487.7 million smartphones and only 414.6 million computers (desktops, laptops and tablets.) according to the study of Canalys

Using social media Web sites is among the most common activity of today’s young people and teenagers. Websites that allows people to interact online is considered a social media site, including social networking sites like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, video sites like YouTube; and blogs. Such sites offer today’s youth a portal for entertainment and communication and the growth has increased dramatically in recent years. For this reason, it is important that parents must be aware of the nature of social media sites, given that not all of them are healthy environments for young ones and teenagers.

Most teenagers in the world today don’t remember a time when there wasn’t some form of social media. An article from Washington post says ,“Teens today, also known as the Facebook Generation or ‘digital natives,’ are part of the first U.S. generation to be so closely identified with technology.” ( Social media is becoming more than just a part of their world, it’s becoming their world. Teens are spending more and more time online than spending time with their families, usually on Facebook or Twitter, and their online life is not just staying on their computer at home. The article also says Most teens now have smart phones where they are on social media networks all throughout the day. 91% of teens go online from mobile devices at least occasionally. Among these “mobile teens,” 94% go online daily or more often. By comparison, teens who don’t access the internet via mobile devices tend to go online less frequently. Some 68% go online at least daily.

Life Before and After Social Networking according to a blogger getasocialbuzz on word press
                Before                                                   After

Childrens that go to school were more into outdoor activities Children now a days prefer staying back at home to play games online or go on social networks, because their interest in outdoor activities is slowly shrinking.
People used to spend lesser time on  Social sites People spend a lot more time on Social sites
Friends and relatives were Greeted on special occasions like birthdays by using messages, telephones and greeting cards Friends and relatives are greeted on special occasions only through social networking sites by many people nowadays.

Here are some negative impacts of social media on Teens

Always connected.Today teens don’t know how to disconnect says Austin McCann a blogger on word press. Social media has made them to take their life online and instead of talking to your friends in person they just go home face their phone/computer and go on their favourite social media network and interact with them for the rest of the day.  One reason this “always connected” activity is harmful is because of the alarming trend of cyberbullying. Example of cyber bullying is when you receive hate text messages or emails, rumors sent by email or posted on social networking sites, and embarrassing pictures, videos, websites, or fake profiles.

  • One of the major disadvantages of using social media sites are the students get so attached to it.  They spend too much time in those social networking sites which can obviously affect the student’s academic performance.  Most students tend to be online till mid night or even more which can obviously lead to Health related problems.

In my opinion Social media made us less social, People are sitting everywhere, gathered, but still into their phones or iPads, they would rather interact with their friends online than actually hang out with them. Because of Facebook and other social media site/apps people loosing its proper real life communication skills, This is an app where people can be anti social and still could connect to the whole world. People are getting online friends more than real friends. Negative Impact of Social Media on Teens
